Andreas Dress

Germany

Prof. Dr. Andreas Dress (born in August 1938) is an eminent mathematician. As the first executive director of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)-Max Planck Gesellschaft (MPG) Partner Institute for Computational Biology (PICB) and the consultant for University of Bielefeld, he is well known in pure mathematics research and numerous application areas. Based on rich experience in scientific research and executive administration, and through close cooperation with his Chinese colleagues, he has managed to develop an innovative management structure for PICB by absorbing the best structural and management design from both CAS and MPG, which plays a positive role in promoting the healthy and rapid development of PICB. Since its inception in 2005, PICB has organized dozens of international academic activities, hosted international training courses on computational biology and launched long-term joint projects and joint graduate training programs with nearly 30 foreign research institutes, and is therefore widely recognized in the field of computational biology.

Toshihiko Emi

Japan

Prof. Dr. Toshihiko Emi (born in February 1935) is a distinguished metallurgist. He is the recipient of 27 worldwide awards, including the Brinell Medal of Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences for his great contribution to the development in modern metallurgy. He was appointed as the Director of the Institute of Research of Iron and Steel (IRIS) of Jiangsu Shasteel Group in 2006, in full charge of the construction and operation of IRIS. There he has launched 101 research projects by the end of 2010, which contribute to 2 million tons of new products with sales revenue of 8.8 billion RMB, and 29 patent applications (including 24 inventions) with 8 granted. He has also made great efforts to promote the cooperation between IRIS and other research institutes and universities, and helped to launch several international cooperation projects.

Hugues de Thé

France

Dr. Hugues de Thé (born in January 1959), professor of University Paris No.7, is the renowned medical expert and the Academician of French Academy of Sciences. He has served as the consultant for the School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2005, and been dedicated to promoting China-France scientific exchanges and collaborations. In this process, he has exerted utmost efforts to facilitate the training of high-caliber medical professionals in China, and contributed greatly to the launch and completion of several collaborative projects. In 2002, through the joint efforts with his Chinese counterparts, he facilitated to set up the China-France Research Center for Life Sciences and Genomics, which is the biggest platform for collaborations between the two countries in the field of life sciences. Based on this Center, International Association Laboratory “Post-translational Modifications in Cancer” (LIA) was established in 2006, which has attracted more French and Chinese scientists to work together. Both the Center and LIA are highly valued by the Chinese and French governments.

John A. Buswell

UK

Prof. Dr. John A. Buswell (born in June 1942) is a famous expert in mushroom biology. He has been working as the Guest Professor in Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences since 2003, and made great contribution to organize “the Fifth International Conference on Mushroom Biology and Mushroom Products” in Shanghai in 2005, the first of its kind in China. He has also greatly facilitated the genome sequencing and proteomics research of important mushroom species such as Lentinula edodes, Volvariella volvacea and Ganoderma lucidum, and has promoted international recognizing of Chinese mushroom research and industry, as well as young mushroom researchers. By establishing a research group in mushroom physiology and biochemistry, inviting relevant foreign experts to China, and facilitating visits of Chinese experts to Europe and the United States, he has helped to improve the research and production of mushroom industry in China.

Hiroshi Kurihara

Japan

Prof. Dr. Hiroshi Kurihara (born in December 1954) is a noted expert in the area of traditional Chinese medicine and health products. As the Deputy Head of the Institute of Chinese Medicine and Natural Products of Jinan University, he has been dedicated to promoting science and technology cooperation and exchanges between China and Japan since 1980s. In 2003, he brought a number of advanced instruments from Japan and established with overseas funding the Brand’s Foundation Health Research Center of Jinan University, which attracted foreign scientists to exchange and cooperate with Chinese scientists. Since coming to China, he has been engaged in the research on functions of traditional Chinese medicine and health products, developed several evaluation methods for activities and functions of Chinese medicine, and promoted the internationalization of traditional Chinese medicine. He has also actively promoted the commercialization of a natural non-caffeinated tea and successfully tackled techniques for variety purification and large-scale nursery, laying a solid foundation for its mass production and internationalization. Moreover, he is devoted to the post-graduate education, supervising more than 40 Chinese students of doctor and master degree, and is widely acclaimed by the students.

Stephen C. Porter

USA

Prof. Dr. Stephen C. Porter (born in April 1934) is a famed geologist in quaternary research and the Chairman of International Quaternary Association. Since 1985, he has been dedicated to the research on Chinese loess, and has made outstanding contribution to Chinese quaternary research, by various academic activities such as cooperating with Chinese scientists, co-organizing international seminars, holding academic lectures and working as visiting professor. During the past 20 years, he has played an important role in training Chinese young scientists, facilitating their cooperation with international counterparts, and making their contribution to quaternary science widely known by the international quaternary community. At the same time, he has provided valuable advice to the development of the Institute of Earth Environment of Chinese Academy of Sciences (IEECAS) and its future missions. He has served as the bridge between scientists from IEECAS and the US, and made special contribution to the development of the Chinese quaternary geology study, bringing the achievements of Chinese quaternary science to the international attention.

Aikichi Iwamoto

Japan

Prof. Dr. Aikichi Iwamoto (born in February 1950) is a famous expert in infectious diseases and virology. He is the Chair of the Research Center for Asian Infectious Diseases in the Institute of Medical Science, University of Tokyo (IMSUT). He has significantly contributed to the collaborative agreement between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the University of Tokyo (UT), which laid a foundation for the establishment of the China-Japan Joint Laboratory of Structural Virology and Immunology at the Institute of Biophysics, CAS, and the China-Japan Joint Laboratory of Molecular Immunology and Molecular Microbiology at the Institute of Microbiology, CAS, under the Program of Founding Research Centers for Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT) in 2005. These two joint laboratories were officially approved in 2006 by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and MEXT as the China-Japan Intergovernmental S&T Collaboration Projects. Moreover, he has been devoted to the cooperation with Chinese hospitals and CDCs in the fields of emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, and facilitated collaborative research in molecular biomedicine between China and Japan.

Max Lu

Australia

Prof. Dr. Max Lu (born in November 1963) is a noted expert in nanometer material. He is the Fellow of Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and the Vice President of University of Queensland. He has established long-term cooperative relations with many Chinese research institutes such as the Institute of Metal Research (IMR) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Particularly since he joined the overseas innovation collaboration team of CAS in 2003 as the core member of the Shenyang Interface Materials R&D Center and guest research fellow of IMR, he has worked closely with IMR in many research fields and completed a number of international cooperation projects. Those activities greatly promote the rapid development of CAS in materials for clean energy, such as solar photocatalysis, energy storage and hydrogen storage. He has also made great efforts in the training of Chinese young professionals in the field of new energy materials, and the promoting of cooperation between China and Australian Academy of Sciences, as well as Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
